A surrogate’s journey can be a magical experience as you carry life for a couple not able to do so themselves. However, just as with a traditional pregnancy for yourself, it’s important to have a support system in place.

Becoming a surrogate means a totally new pregnancy where you have to undergo medical treatments and more that you didn’t have for your own pregnancy. And if you’re an egg donor, the same applies to you as you prepare for egg extraction. The process also involves a lot of planning and preparation, as well as decision-making, which can sometimes be a bit overwhelming for some.

You’ll most likely go through a few emotional challenges, which is why it’s very important to have a solid support system in place. Your surrogacy journey isn’t just something you’ll experience alone as it will also have an impact on those close to you, including your children, partner and close friends and family. Having these people by your side during your surrogacy pregnancy can make it less stressful and more positive, especially when difficult emotions start to arise.

A support network will offer emotional support given any pregnant woman will most likely experience difficult days when they’re not feeling their best. One’s network will also provide them with practical assistance when you’re physically and emotionally exhausted. They’ll be able to take care of you, run errands, cook meals and the like when you’re not feeling up for it yourself.

Figuring out who to include in your surrogate experience can be overwhelming, but it’s vital that you choose people who will help contribute a positive experience for your surrogacy journey. You’ll want to find people outside of your surrogacy agency, medical team and even people outside of your daily life. Suggestions include: your parents or siblings, extended family members, close friends, the intended parents, teachers, counselors, religious leaders, and even those in the surrogate community who better understand what you’re going through.

Support can come from anywhere and everyone’s surrogacy support will look different. But whoever you choose to join you, make sure that they are helpful and really do have your best interests in mind. Once you find your support system, you’ll want to decide on how to involve them and to what degree. Some might be helping you in the beginning, while others might aid right before you deliver. There are tons of ways to involve your support system throughout your surrogate journey, including: taking you to appointments, helping you with daily tasks, or just being there when you’re having a hard day.

By having a support system in place, you’ll be able to overcome any challenges that surrogacy may have as they help keep you strong during times of need.
